I absolutely loved being a part of Jonathan & Phillip’s Same Sex Wedding in Brisbane. One of my favourite things was Sadie (Phil and Jonny’s dog – ring bearer). She played such a great part in the ceremony and nearly brought Phil and Jonny to tears.

I had an absolutely great time photographing Phil and Jonny during their portrait session. The flowers were out in Brisbane and we got some pics that looked like they could have come straight out of Japan. an absolute cracker of a sunset also helped.

Perhaps my favourite thing was learning about their somewhat sweet, yet awkward and slightly painful proposal. It’s long but if you’re into funny and comical type love stories, it might be worth your time. Here it is:

“I (Phil) proposed. We agreed early on in our relationship that it would be me to propose. Probably because I’m a little bit of a control freak, but also because I wanted us to kick life goals first. I organised a romantic holiday to Tasmania, and gifted this to Jonathan. I planned to propose about half way through our trip at Piermont Retreat, near Freycinet on the East Coast.

The trip itself was on again and off again, due to Covid restrictions. Intending to fly on Saturday morning, we cancelled our trip on Friday afternoon – due to the restrictions – and then re-booked it all again a few hours later as restrictions were lifted. I had to make special plans to get a hold of the ring, which I’d delayed considering our trip was cancelled.

After that whirlwind, we arrived in Tasmania and spent the first couple of nights in Hobart. At dinner one night, I received a text from a friend asking “How did it go with your Cousin?” My cousin was my jeweller, and so he was asking if I’d managed to get a hold of the ring. Jonathan saw this, and I’m sure put two and two together. He swears to this day he didn’t realise anything… I had a cry and placed a few phone calls for moral support. If he didn’t know initially, he definitely knew after all of this. We agreed to pretend like nothing had happened, and made it to Piermont.

I had been in contact with them a couple of times to set things up. As I walked into reception, the receptionist heard my name and said “OHHHH THE PROPOSAL”. Lucky I’d sent Jonathan for a walk around the retreat. I arranged to do it that night – and for a bottle of champagne to be mysteriously waiting by the fire facing the ocean. I lied to Jonathan and told him that retreat put on drinks each night by the fire.

When we arrived, surprise, we were the only ones! The champagne was missing however, so I ducked inside to ask for it. The waitress comes out and says…”CONGRATULATIONS!!! IS THERE A RING!?” Jonathan avoided my gaze and pretended like he didn’t exist in that moment. I told the waitress there wasn’t a ring “yet”, hoping she’d get the hint, but she went on to ask if we will get one. Eventually, she poured us our champagne, and told us how excited she was, and left. I turned to Jonathan and said “so will you marry me or whatever?”

He forgot to answer for a while, but eventually said yes.”
