Oh 2020, where do I even begin…
If you were to ask me a few months ago to sum up the year 2020 I would probably say something with reference to Game of Throne’s White Walkers whilst dropping a few ‘F’ bombs. But note that I use both words ‘epic’ as well as ‘disastrous’. As much as I would like to say ‘screw you 2020’, there has definitely been some extraordinary and emotional moments this year. So, where exactly do I begin with 2020?
2020 was meant to the year that I photographed my first wedding in Italy. Not only was this going to be my first Italian wedding but it was to take at an ancient abbey in the heart of Tuscany. Corinne and I had planned on making a holiday out of this opportunity and visit Iceland where I was to do a photo shoot also. I also had so many weddings in epic locations that were postponed until 2021 (thank you Rona!).
To say this year has been a turbulent, emotional rollercoaster of a ride is anything but an understatement. However, with every bad there is always some good. Always!
2020 has also been the year of magical elopements, micro + Zoom weddings, and emotional moments. Something about the trying trying circumstances of this year has brought out so much emotion in people. I’ve seen couples burst into tears upon seeing virtual guests through mobile phones. And I’ve had a good few weddings where toilet rolls were being bandied around during speeches.
There was a period where I would loathe looking at my email notifications fearing the inevitable postponements. But here I am with now with some amazing upcoming weddings and elopements still to go this year and having captured over 20 weddings, despite all the postponements. I look at this gallery from 2020 and it is clear that there has been far more good than bad that has come from this year.
The couples I have photographed this year have been amazing. I can’t begin to fathom the extraordinary circumstances these couples would have faced when planning their weddings. And I can honestly say that all the recent weddings I have photographed have felt like non-Covid weddings. Apart from certain guests not being able to attend due to border restrictions, the dance floors are now again pumping and spirits are definitely high.
I can’t wait to see what next year brings. With over 40 bookings so far and more to come, 2021 will be epic. But for now, I hope you enjoy this gallery of images from the unforgettable year that was 2020.
